JUDGES
This book is grouped with the prophetic books but is more of a history of the judges who ruled from the death of Joshua until the time of Samuel. There were thirteen judges who ruled Israel during this period. It is believed to have covered a span of roughly 400 years.
There are only suggestions as to who compiled this book. Many believe it was Samuel, possibly during his retirement. It also seems probable that the writer made use of written records left from prior judges. Judges then were different from judges today, whom basically preside/decide over legal matters. Back then, judges were leaders over military and administrative concerns.
We will be using the New King James Version for the text.
